Since I moved here in 1989 to cover the provincial legislature for ATV/ASN/CTV, I've watched the slow decline of the local media - with the occasional bright spot.
- The ATV NB newsroom in Moncton was closed and operations moved to Halifax
- The ATV Press Gallery bureau cut in half
- Commercial radio consolidated and news staff reduced by 80 per cent
- CBC Radio local air time reduced
- The Northside News is published - then sold to the dominant newspaper chain in the province
- Here! is published - then sold to the dominant newspaper chain in the province
- Gleaner goes to mornings - shedding fresh news and sports coverage while dramatically increasing typos and errors
- fredFM goes on air - shakes things up a bit - then like everyone else, jacks up their ad rates
- Rogers TV does some community coverage - but their resources are slender
So in the past 15-plus years, we have a bigger population, less coverage and higher ad rates.
Is justFRED going to cure all that? Probably not. But with your help, we think we can improve the situation.
Cheers,
George
