Media Release: River Levels Expected to Rise in Fredericton Area
Posted by justfred.ca on August 4th, 2008
Fredericton, NB – The City of Fredericton reminds residents living along the St. John River, Naswaak River, and other area waterways to be watchful of rising waters due to recent heavy rains.

This is further to the advisory sent out by the New Brunswick Emergency Measures Organization on Sunday, August 3, 2008 concerning increased water flows along New Brunswick waterways.  (Direct link:  http://www.gnb.ca/public/english/2008-0123e.htm.)

With the flood waters from upriver and more rain expected today, the level of the St. John River in the Fredericton area is expected to rise.

Water levels increases will be of particular concern to farm operations in low lying areas adjacent to water courses and to operations on any of the islands along the St. John River.

Boaters, fishers and other persons in close proximity to water courses should exercise extreme caution as water flows will increase beyond normal summer levels.

Docks and other property near the shore line should be secured to avoid being lost.

Please refer to the latest public forecasts issued by Environment Canada for weather information.

The City of Fredericton will work with the New Brunswick Emergency Measures Organization to provide updates as necessary.

New Brunswick Summer Music Festival Lineup
Posted by justfred.ca on July 31st, 2008
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 31, 2008
Media contact: Nancy Reid 506-458-7836

Jazzy Kids, Classy Kids, Tunes & ‘Toons: Summer Music Festival hosts free family talks and performances

The New Brunswick Summer Music Festival in Fredericton, now in its fifteenth year, is known for its two-week offerings of classical music performances, but this year, organizers are expanding their program to include more family and youth oriented activities.

The Festival is hosting a three-part series of informal talks and live performances aimed at exposing kids to music. With the financial support of the City of Fredericton’s Arts Culture and Heritage program and the Fredericton Community Foundation, organizers are able to offer the workshops for free.

Called Jazzy Kids, Classy Kids, Tunes & ‘Toons, the workshops will be held over a three-day period, August 11, 14 and 18th, at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre..

“Even though our focus has always been classical chamber music, we launched a workshop program last year with a focus on the history and construction of jazz,” said Festival coordinator Nancy Reid.  “We had such a great response, especially from children and youth, we knew immediately that we wanted to offer an expanded program again this year.  Our goal with these free events is to create a family-friendly and fun atmosphere that gently educates kids about music and hopefully encourages them to explore our other more formal Festival concerts.”

“This year we are going to explore some of the lighter aspects of jazz, brass and film,” Reid said.  “We have a dynamic music educator who absolutely held our audience spell bound at last year’s jazz talks.  Nationally known jazz saxophonist Scott Marshall will join us again to lead the first workshop.  Kids seem to immediately ‘get’ jazz when Scott is explaining and demonstrating it,” she added.

Know as the Team Canada of Trombones, the brass quintet I Tromboni will present a noon hour performance on Fanfares and Flourishes for the second event in the series.  “I Tromboni is about the most fun you can have with a trombone,” said Reid.  “Expect to hear everything from Ravel to the theme song from the Simpsons; Copeland to Star Wars in a riotous show the kids will love.”

The final workshop looks at the role of music in film and in animation or cartoons and will feature the work of prolific Canadian film composer, Lou Applebaum.  Applebaum did a large body of work for the National Film Board and some of those films and animations will be featured.  This talk will be led by musician and educator Richard Hornsby.

The three events in this series are free and open to all ages.

For more information on the Jazzy Kids, Classy Kids, Tunes & ‘Toons talks and shows or the Summer Music Festival program, contact the Festival office at 458-7836.

Media Release: NotaBle Acts Theatre Festival July 22-Aug 2
Posted by justfred.ca on July 18th, 2008
The 2008 NotaBle Acts Theatre Festival opens July 22 and runs through August 2 at four venues in Fredericton. This year’s festival features thirteen new plays by New Brunswick dramatists, including three main stage productions, free daytime street theatre, and free public readings of new works in development.

Opening the festival on July 22 and running nightly through July 26 at 8 PM at the Black Box Theatre, STU, is Chapel Arm by Step Taylor. Chapel Arm is a darkly complex and challenging drama, surprising both in its philosophical scope and emotional resonance. Dodi, a lawyer living in Toronto, returns to her childhood home of Chapel Arm, Newfoundland, only to discover her ex-boyfriend engaged to a brutish woman. To make matters worse, her favorite uncle has burnt her family’s old house to the ground. Feeling more than a little estranged, Dodi tries to understand how the town still seems to hold such a strange power over her, one that makes her remember, one that makes her unable to leave.

Chapel Arm is directed by Montreal-based Rose Plotek, recent graduate of the National Theatre School of Canada directing programme, and stars Fredericton actors Robbie O’Neill, Marissa Robinson, and Leah Holder, along with Montreal’s Greg Gale.

The festival’s second week stages the winners of this year’s NotaBle Acts playwriting contest. Acting Out, a double-bill of the two winners of the one act category of the contest, takes the stage at Memorial Hall, UNB, July 30-August 2, featuring Our Mouths Are Filters by Kathleen Brown and Someone Else’s Dream by Jeff Lloyd. Taking It To The Streets stages the five winners of the festival’s ten minute play contest as an hour of free lunchtime theatre. Taking it to the Streets runs daily at noon in downtown Fredericton’s Barracks Square July 28-August 1 and features plays by Chris Campbell, Jordan Dashner, Jeremy Gorman, Chris Nyarady, and Brad O’Donnell. And Play Out Loud, running at 8 PM at Brewbakers Restaurant July 28 and 29, will feature free public readings of five new plays.

Tickets for main stage shows are $15, $10 for students. For full schedule and ticket information, visit www.nbacts.com or call (506) 458-7406.

Media Release: St. Thomas University Establishes New Holocaust Centre
Posted by justfred.ca on July 17th, 2008
St. Thomas University Media Release - St. Thomas University Establishes New Holocaust Centre

St. Thomas University is establishing a Holocaust Centre to raise greater awareness of the plight of Holocaust victims during the Second World War, as well as other genocides throughout the twentieth century and into the twenty-first century. As part of its education and research program, the new centre will support the Ripples Internment Camp project, the only camp in North America that housed Jewish internees during the Second World War.

“Our centre will be distinct in content and mission. It will educate young people about the tragedies that transpire when prejudice, racism, and hate target groups in society,” said Dr. Michael McGowan, professor in Human Rights and director of the new centre. “People learn to hate and they can learn to stop hating by knowledge, understanding and engagement with others.”

He said the centre will give recognition to the significance of the SHOAH as a means to develop leadership to prevent similar atrocities. “We want to bring students together from across Canada and around the world to increase their knowledge of genocide and equip them to become leaders in their work for peace, understanding and respect.”

The Holocaust Centre will deliver educational programmes for students and professional groups, provide scholarships, organize seminars and conferences, and sponsor public lectures by scholars. The new centre will co-operate with other organizations such as the Simon Wiesenthal Centre, the Canadian Council of Christians and Jews, the Canadian Centre for Diversity, and Yad Vashem.

Three outreach activities are already planned for the year – a study mission to Germany and Poland, a summer institute on diversity and respect, and interviewing surviving Ripples Camp internees. A fund-raising campaign will be launched for the Endowment Fund of the St. Thomas University Holocaust Centre, and a new advisory board will guide the centre’s activities.

At its Summer Convocation held today, St. Thomas University awarded an honourary degree to Philip Riteman, a Holocaust survivor. Born in Poland, Riteman and his family were sent to the Pruzhany ghetto in 1941 and the following year, they were packed into boxcars for a week’s journey to the Auschwitz-Birkeneau extermination camp. Tattooed as prisoner 98706, he would be the sole survivor of his extended family. After forty years of silent mourning, Riteman first spoke of his experience as a Holocaust survivor in 1989 to give voice to the millions who died and to silence Holocaust deniers.

St. Thomas University (www.stu.ca ), located in Fredericton, New Brunswick, is Canada’s only exclusively liberal arts university. Its cornerstone Bachelor of Arts programme encompasses 25 fields of study with numerous interdisciplinary options including an innovative Human Rights programme. St. Thomas is home to many research centres including the Atlantic Human Rights Centre. Both the Human Rights programme and the Atlantic Human Rights Centre seek to educate and train young leaders.

Media Release: NotaBle Acts Unveils 2008 Summer Theatre Festival Lineup
Posted by justfred.ca on June 18th, 2008
The NotaBle Acts Theatre Company unveiled its 2008 Summer Theatre Festival lineup in a launch held today at the new Barracks Square Tent in Fredericton.
The company will stage thirteen new plays by New Brunswick writers at the festival, slated for July 22-August 2 in Fredericton.

Opening the festival is Chapel Arm by Step Taylor, which will run at the Black Box Theatre, STU, July 22-26. An emotional and unconventional homecoming story set in rural Newfoundland, Chapel Arm is the latest of several of Taylor’s plays to debut at the festival, but the first to appear on the festival’s main stage. The play was chosen for the distinction, making Taylor the youngest playwright to open the festival, following a successful public reading of an earlier version of the play at the 2007 festival.

Chapel Arm will be directed by recent National Theatre School directing program graduate Rose Plotek and will star Fredericton actors Robbie O’Neill, Leah Holder, and Marissa Robinson, along with Montrealer Greg Gale.

The festival’s second main stage production will be Acting Out, a twin bill of the two winners NB Acts’ province-wide one-act playwriting competition. Acting Out will run July 30-August 2 at Memorial Hall, UNB, and will feature plays by Moncton’s Jeff Lloyd and Fredericton writer Kathleen Brown. Lloyd’s play, Someone Else’s Dream, is a slice of rural New Brunswick realism set at a bachelor party where four friends poignantly ponder their life choices, prime among them the ongoing conflict between the pull of home and the lure of greener pastures elsewhere in the country. Brown’s Our Mouths Are Filters: Documenting in the Brink, set in the Canadian high Arctic, is a poetic and imagistic meditation on conquest, heroism, and the clash between human and natural ecology in a landscape threatened by global warming.
From July 29-August 1, Barracks Square in Fredericton will play host to Taking It to the Streets, NB Acts’ annual staging of the five winners of its contest for plays ten minutes and under. The plays are presented together daily as an hour of free outdoor lunchtime theatre, starting at noon.
Comedy is at the top of the menu at this year’s Taking It to the Streets, with a lineup heavy on laughs. This year’s five winning plays are Rock It Science by Christopher Campbell, Socially Correct by Jordan Dashner, Doommates by Jeremy Gorman, The 5th Wall by Christopher Nyarady, and Our Day in the Sun by Bradley O’Donnell.
Rounding out the festival lineup will be two nights of public staged readings of new scripts in development, July 28 and 29.
NotaBle Acts is also co-producing Shakespeare’s As You Like It, set to run June 19-29 in Fredericton as the third annual Bard in the Barracks.
Festival Co-Artistic Director Len Falkenstein is excited about this year’s lineup: “We have possibly our best festival ever shaping up with strength across the board in all our scripts. We’re seeing more and more incredible work by playwrights in this province.”
Founded in 2001, NotaBle Acts is dedicated to developing and producing new plays by New Brunswick dramatists. All seven of the winning entries in the company’s 2008 playwriting contest will undergo intensive workshopping before the plays are produced at the festival, and audience feedback sessions take place for all the plays.
