Canadian Soldier Wins Canada Day Xbox Party for Oromocto
Posted by justfred.ca on June 30th, 2008
Cpl. Robert Dehmel of Oromocto convinced Microsoft Canada that his town should be the location chosen to host the 2008 Canada Day Xbox Party with this entry:
Here in Oromocto, just 10 minutes out of our capital city, Fredericton, we have nothing but Canadian pride. Oromocto is a military town, 90% of its people are serving in the Armed Forces and we are stationed out of CFB Gagetown, which is the largest base in Canada. The last rotation to Afghanistan was all of our members at the base. When we got back from serving overseas (about 3000 soldiers) the town had decorated the city in yellow ribbons to welcome back the soldiers. There was a parade for us all and a Canadian Army band was playing as we all exited our aircrafts. This town has nothing but pride in our heritage and Canada. We all play war games on our Xbox 360's and are true gamers at heart. You would never find a town that would celebrate Canada day with as much enthusiasm. Below is an image of a Canadian Soldier (myself) on one of the highest peaks in Afghanistan holding the Canadian flag. Thanks Xbox.

Congratulations, Robert.

Check out the details on the http://www.xbox.com/en-CA/community/jade/articles/0708/contestwinner.htm">Xbox web site...

Overpriced Rogers iPhone Finally Comes to Canada
Posted by justfred.ca on June 30th, 2008
After holding up the Canadian launch of the iPhone for more than a year, Rogers finally released the pricing plan for the coveted Apple product and guess what? Canadians - at least those fool enough to sign up for a 3-year deal costing more than $3,000 total - will continue to pay among the highest mobile communication rates in the world.

Not the Western world. Not the developed world. The WORLD world.

But the good news is that the rip-off-rates announced by Rogers for the iPhone have begun a groundswell of complaints about the protectionist barriers that let Canada's telcos rake in huge profits (Rogers' $898 million profit on sales of $2.5 billion) while relegating the rest of us to stoopid consumer status.

The worst of it isn't the pain of paying more than the rest of the world to communicate while on the go. The worst of it is that by delaying mobile adoption - and that statistics are clear that mobile communication adoption in Canada is lagging - we become late adopters.

So does that matter? You bet it does. The early adopters have the best opportunity to become producers of the next generation of products and services in the mobile world. But thanks to protected pricing for the telcos, we've been forced to wait around until most of those seats are filled. The seats that are left are for consumers, and that's not the section you want to be in if you care about Canada's economic future.

Cheers,
George

justFRED-O-GRAM The End of June
Posted by justfred.ca on June 30th, 2008
Now THAT was a weekend: cold, wet and busy.

We spent the weekend in the middle of a massive server upgrade that included one set of servers moved to a new location. There were some disruptions, but everything appears to be back to normal this morning (there may be a few broken pieces - please let us know if you spot any).

Besides spending the weekend in server hell....we visited the market, picked some strawberries, asked a whole bunch of people and pets to Say Cheese, Please...checked out some gardens, walked around in the rain, and prepared for tomorrow's big Canada Day outting.

http://justFRED.ca/

In the calendars this week you'll find camps and concerts, art exhibits and summer swimming hours.

http://justfred.ca/justfred.forums/calendar.php

You can find the Canada Day schedule of events - courtesy of Fredericton's Civic Pride Committee - here:

http://justFRED.ca/canadaday/

We'll be set up just inside Officers Square near the stage for Canada Day and we'll be roaming around all day with our cameras looking for you to Say Cheese, Please...

Cheers,
George

FDSA U18 CAPS 3 - Moncton First Touch 1
Posted by justfred.ca on June 30th, 2008
Two goals from U16 pick up, David Jamael and a single from Patrick Burtt carried the CAPS to victory on a rain soaked Chapman Field. Matt Archibald replied for Moncton from the penalty spot.

The CAPS, undetered by the rain pouring rain, began the game on the attack. After 9 minutes, Jeff Khoury and Jason Rouse combined to Jamael in the box and he made no mistake from 12 metres out. The CAPS continued to press with Rouse being stopped at point blank range by Brad Hughes in the Moncton net, before the keeper parried a Duplessis effort away for a corner.

At the other end, the CAPS defence was in control with Ray Harris and Mitchel Stewart snuffing out any threat and Brett Johnson and Dylan Hughes barring any passage along the wings. At the 44 minute mark, Marc Rossignol did well to get a cross in on the right wing, the ball was cleared to Patrick Burtt and he fired a shot into the top corner from 25 metres out.

In the second half the CAPS continued to exploit Moncton's backline with Khoury coming close after dribbling his way past two defenders. At the 49 minute mark, Jamael beat Moncton's off-side trap taking a Harris pass in stride and chipping the ball over the onrushing keeper.

With 15 minutes left, Moncton was awarded a penalty, which Matt Archibald fired home to reduce the deficit. Moncton had a quick 2 on 2 break with 5 minutes left, but the resulting shot was wel saved by Marc Gagnon in the Fredericton net.

The CAPS are now 2 wins, 2 ties and 1 loss on the season and head to Saint John on Thursday.

Server Upgrade - Some Problems
Posted by justfred.ca on June 28th, 2008
Update: 3:20 pm

The slideshow issue was resolved a few hours ago. There are other niggling problems - which we hope will be temporary while the servers are moved and installed in their new location. No word on the ETA for getting back to normal (yet)...

-----------original post------------

We're in the middle of a server upgrade (which includes the physical relocation of one of our main servers) and while most of the transition has gone smoothly, there have been a few problems.

The issue we're working on at the moment is preventing us from activating Saturday's home page update. The update is there - the links in place - but we can't get the new slideshow to replace Friday's version.

We're working on it...

Cheers,
George

justFRED-0-GRAM So long June
Posted by jfnews@justFRED.ca on June 27th, 2008
Can you believe it? It's the last Friday in June already and Canada
Day is only a couple of days away. No concert in the park to bring
you today, but we do have lots of outdoor photos including some best
friends, a lick of paint, Bard in the Barracks performance, a fiesty
little dog, plenty of evidence of summer, a couple more videos of the
tiniest soccer players, the Bayou Boys show @ The Plex...

http://justFRED.ca/

In the calendars - a five-day weekend of events from summer camps to
concerts, Oromocto Pioneer Days to the big one on Tuesday: Canada Day
2008.

http://justfred.ca/justfred.forums/calendar.php

And speaking of Canada Day 2008: the full schedule of events is here,
courtesy of our friends at Fredericton Civic Pride:

http://justFRED.ca/canadaday/

We want to say a special Thank You! to the NB chapter of the Canadian
Paraplegic Association. They surprised and humbled us yesterday when
they presented us with their 2007-2008 Media Commitment to Community
Award. It's the very first award that justFRED has received...and it
means a lot coming from such an important community organization.

So now we're inspired...and we're getting our cameras ready for
Canada Day. You'll find us in our tent near the stage in Officers
Square - and if you don't find us - we may find you. If you see us -
make sure to Say Cheese, Please.

Cheers,

George

So...River Jam 2008 will feature 17 bands (nearly double the previous
max), Keith Hallett played the blues at the ampitheatre in
Fredericton North, there's a double header of live music on two
stages during Canada Day...and we also added a couple more youth
soccer videos, some flowers (who can resist after what felt like 10
years of winter), and we saw what you can do with one of our little
green justFRED cards...

http://justFRED.ca/

In the calendars, summer camps, annual general meetings, theatre in
the barracks, bagpipes in the park, Credence tribute band @ The Plex,
and much more.

justFRED-0-GRAM It’s Really Summer
Posted by jfnews@justFRED.ca on June 24th, 2008
It's really summer when the music moves outdoors, children are on the
streets and in the parks, the trees are fully leafed, the flowers are
in bloom everywhere, cyclists are out, impromtu games are springing up
on lawns and in driveways, we have to spread the market and soccer
pictures out over a few days because there are so darn many of them,
and there's not a winter boot to be seen.

http://justFRED.ca/

Lots to do in the calendar today - from concerts in the park to
summer camps of every description.

http://www.justfred.ca/justfred.forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&day=2008-6-24&c=1

And here at justFRED, we're busy preparing for the next big thing:
Canada Day. Stay tuned.

Cheers,

George
