justFRED-0-GRAM Non-stop action
Posted by jfnews@justFRED.ca on May 23rd, 2008
In the albums today, the Rotary Club's annual dinner and auction to
raise money for Camp Rotary, a video of the work done at the camp by
members of the Armed Forces, photos and video from Kathleen
Gorley-McSorley's concert @ the Charlotte St Arts Centre, and more.

http://images.justfred.ca/

But comparatively uneventful compared with what's coming up in the
calendars for the next few days: the Gala Concert of the Fredericton
School Girl Choir featuring Measha Brueggergosman, Geography of a
Horse Dreamer at Mem Hall, the Fredericton Spring Sprint, the
Catastrophic event, the opening of the Mars exhibit at UNB, Theresa
Malenfant, Matthew Good, NBCCD Graduation, and so much more.

So many choices...decisions, decisions...

Cheers,

George

justFRED-0-GRAM Better Late Than Never…
Posted by jfnews@justFRED.ca on May 22nd, 2008
Ah, late nights and early mornings and not enough time to write the
Daily Fred until now. We've been finishing up a video of the
renovations at Camp Rotary done by the members of 74 Construction
Troop at CFB Gagetown. It's going to be part of the Fredericton
Rotary Club's thank you to the members of the Armed Forces who
renovated the camp earlier this spring. And we did an exciting shoot
at Speedway 660 yesterday that included a ride in the jump seat next
to pro driver Lonnie Sommerville...watch for those in the coming
days.

In the albums today, photos from around town, more signs of spring,
and the first of some materials from the amazing Mars exibit coming
to UNB...

http://images.justfred.ca/

In the calendars, a couple of very busy days coming up - Theresa
Malenfant's at the James Joyce Pub this evening, the Rotary Club is
holding their Thank You to the troops at the Fredericton Inn this
evening, there's a fundraiser / benefit concert to help send local
fiddler Kathleen Gorey-McSorley to the Irish championships in August,
and a whole lot more...

http://justfred.ca/justfred.forums/calendar.php

So without further ado...it's back to work...and thanks for your
patience.

Cheers,

George

Carbon Footprint
Posted by Mae Whyte on May 22nd, 2008
Carbon neutral, carbon footprint, http://www.davidsuzuki.org/Climate_Change/What_You_Can_Do/carbon_offsets.asp">carbon offsets. Confusing. We had a carbon neutral day on May 2, 2008. The buses in Fredericton were free. But what does this “carbon issue” refer to, really?

Your carbon footprint refers to the amount of greenhouse gases (GHG) you, the consumer, release into the atmosphere. It's hard to think about carbon pollution when we're actually carbon-based life forms, but an imbalance of any element can cause huge problems. Carbon dioxide is the big one here, and “carbon” is generally used to refer to GHG emissions. I once wrote a large paper on nitrogen pollution caused by mortuary practices, industrial fertilizers, etc. Anyhow, the point is that reducing your greenhouse gas emissions is not enough to offset the damage we humans are causing our environment. Getting electricity from a renewable source is better still; using biofuel also helps. But we all have a carbon footprint regardless of how we live our lives; it's part of our society’s structure.

Even if you take the bus to work, buy post-consumer recycled paper products, and have solar panels all over your house, you are still (in)directly responsible for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. You can voluntarily offset your carbon footprint by purchasing carbon credits (a.k.a. carbon offsets), supporting people who voluntarily reduce carbon emissions. Think of it as sponsoring a windmill operation or reforestation project. And you don't have to be a naughty corporation who went over its projected CO2 production. You can be monetized through an emissions trading program if your work reduces carbon footprints. Feetprints. Check out our provincial government’s http://www.efficiencynb.ca/index-e.asp">Efficiency NB programs for more info. You can also buy into one voluntarily without owning your own business, naughty or otherwise. The Fredericton Community Foundation, for instance, has started a voluntary donation program for carbon offsets called the http://login.mybusinessadmin.com/noauth/download.php?id=14113">Fredericton Green Fund.

Canada’s not doing as well as some European countries at meeting the Kyoto Protocol, but we’re not horrible, either. There are several http://www.carboncatalog.org/providers/canada/">carbon offset providers in Canada, including some not-for-profits. Even http://www.aircanada.com/en/travelinfo/traveller/zfp.html">Air Canada offers carbon offsets. We have four of 51 http://www.cdmgoldstandard.org/about_goldstandard.php?id=16">Gold Standard organizations in our fine country. And there are a number of local New Brunswick and Fredericton-based initiatives as well, proving that we are determined to reduce our carbon footprint!

justFRED-0-GRAM April Showers?
Posted by jfnews@justFRED.ca on May 21st, 2008
Despite the heavy snow this winter, and the flood earlier this month,
the ground is actually quite dry. That's why open fires have been
banned in the province. So some April showers in late May aren't such
a bad thing.

You'll see the results of the spring weather in our albums today:
smiling faces, shadow cats, the final collection from our trip
downriver, and more:

http://images.justFRED.ca/

Talk about a busy week - and a busy weekend. The Fredericton
Chamber's annual meeting is tonight, there's an open jam at Musiplex
with Allison Hovey, singers Measha Brueggergosman and Theresa
Malenfant are in town, and so much more.

http://justfred.ca/justfred.forums/calendar.php

We're working away, meantime, on the to-list of changes to the site
that you recommended. Some of the changes have been easier to
accomplish than others, but we'll just keep ploughing through the
list.

Cheers,

George

justFRED-0-GRAM Back to work
Posted by jfnews@justFRED.ca on May 19th, 2008
Some factoids about the Victoria Day weekend:

- It's not a statutory holiday in New Brunswick or Nova Scotia

- It's not celebrated at all in...drum roll please...England.

But we do hope you enjoyed the generally great weather. As you can
see, we took a trip downriver, visited the Boyce Farmer's market, and
celebrated spring.

http://images.justFRED.ca/

Looking for something to do? Check ou the calendars and you'll find a
Victorian Tea at Ste. Anne's Court, help for children with math &
science @ UNB, an evening course for gardeners, and more:

http://justfred.ca/justfred.forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&day=2008-5-20&c=1

We've been fairly busy over the weekend - tearing apart and
rebuilding our office space, working on improvements to the web site
(many of them in response to your comments and suggestions), and
preparing for what promises to be a very busy week ahead...and an
even busier weekend.

Cheers,

George

justFRED-0-GRAM Victoria Day
Posted by jfnews@justFRED.ca on May 16th, 2008
While it's not a statutory holiday in New Brunswick, many people in
Fredericton are preparing to enjoy the first long weekend of the
year. That means gardening, opening the camp or cottage, cleaning up
the yard, a walk in the park...

..but before you go, check out today's galleries where you'll find
the second batch of photos from the skateboard rally, a day at the
office fixing potholes, some selections from Joseph Plaskett's
exhibit @ Gallery 78, photos and videos from Thursday's Guns N Roses
tribute @ The Plex, and more...

http://images.justFRED.ca/

A ton of events in the calendars, from local music to art exhibits,
from yard sales to...well, other stuff.

http://justfred.ca/justfred.forums/calendar.php

So what do we do on holiday weekends? Three guesses...and when you
see us, Say Cheese, Please.

Cheers,

George

PS - Our poll about making skateboards street legal? Split right down
the middle.

PPS - The justFRED-O-Gram will be taking a holiday as well. See you
on Tuesday.

justFRED-0-GRAM To Skate Or Not To Skate
Posted by jfnews@justFRED.ca on May 14th, 2008
So just how green is Fredericton? The skateboard debate won't end with
Lee Breen heading off to jail for five days. There were conversations
on nearby street corners about the pros and cons of skateboards, as
well as the pros and cons of skateboarders.

Our poll asking should they be allowed on the streets is running neck
and neck for and against. You can check the latest results - and cast
your ballot - here:

http://www.justfred.ca/justfred.forums/showthread.php?p=907&posted=1#post907

As you'd expect, we have photos of the skateboard rally in our
albums. We also have several exhibits, shots from the Cancer Day of
Action gathering at the Playhouse east gallery, some critters, some
shots from around town, yet another album from the weekend Fredkid
fair. You'll find it all here:

http://images.justFRED.ca/

In the calendars, you can learn how to taste wine (they give CLASSES
IN THAT?), Guns & Roses tribute band Paradise City is @ The Plex,
there's punk rock yoga @ Boom Nightclub, and for you quieter lot,
there's Rotary Bingo @ the Fredericton North Rotary Club. All of that
and more here:

http://justfred.ca/justfred.forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&day=2008-5-15&c=1

OK - so my last word on skateboarding for now: Imagine all of the
land we could reclaim if we only had skateboard parking downtown?
Twenty of us could share a parking space.

Cheers,
George

PS A special thanks to Shasta Merlini for the Cancer Action Day
photos.

justFRED-O-GRAM - The Skateboard Poll - Yes Or No?
Posted by jfnews@justFRED.ca on May 14th, 2008
Should we allow skateboards to operate on the streets of Fredericton?

Tell us what you think...we really want to know.

PS - This forum discussion / poll were set up as a result of several
emails in response to this morning's justFRED-O-GRAM about that very
issue.

justFRED-0-GRAM Skateboard Injustice?
Posted by jfnews@justFRED.ca on May 14th, 2008
How green is Fredericton if skateboarding is a crime? Should the city
do everything in its power to keep our streets the exclusive domain
of cars and trucks?

In the calendar today - and in the galleries - you find information
about a noon rally at city hall to protest city Bylaw S-9 which
states "No person shall coast or slide on a slide, toboggan, wagon,
skateboard or other device on a street in the city."

Lee Breen was convicted of violating the bylaw and will turn himself
in at the Justice Building at 1 pm to serve a five-day sentence for
the crime of being too green.

Also in the albums, the display called 'animal vegetable mineral' on
now at the NB Crafts Council office at the Charlotte Street Arts
Centre, signs of spring and nature, progress on your new Northside
Canadian Tire Store, and more.

http://images.justFRED.ca/

The calendar of events for today is over here - and includes the
skateboard rally, an open house at CHSR, and much more:

http://justfred.ca/justfred.forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&day=2008-5-14&c=1

Enjoy another beautiful spring day - and if you're caught
skateboarding on city streets, do not pass go, do not collect $200,
but go straight to jail...sounds a little mad, doesn't it?

Update:
Do you agree? Disagree?
Take our poll and have your say:
