IT lives
Posted by justfred.ca on November 23rd, 2007
After 10 years in the wilderness...the information technology sector in New Brunswick has re-surfaced with a bang: ThinkNB was an excellent gathering: well organized, well run, and exuding enthusiasm.
Steve Kelly, the steering committee, and Master Promotions deserve a lot of credit for producing an important event.

justFRED Radio ’soft’ launch
Posted by justfred.ca on November 23rd, 2007
It's a week later than we'd hoped, but on the other hand, the delay meant we were able to get more robust software into place and provide the ability to sit back and listen - or to select the tracks you want from the list. We have a growing stack of music either created or played locally that we're adding to our music library and we're on the hunt for more. We're eager eager to explore how Internet radio (IR) can help local bands. The IR you see today is in its infancy, and no one is really sure what it's going to look like when it grows up, but we think it's going to be very interesting to watch...and are really happy we're part of this revolution. Cheers,
George
justFRED.ca PS - Probably a good idea to include the link, right? That's what happens when you post late at night...

Day 1, Year 2
Posted by justfred.ca on November 17th, 2007
Back from the matinée - the first matinée they've done in a long time - to celebrate the Downtown Blues Band's 20th anniversary. And our 52nd visit in a row to the Boyce Farmer's Market. Seemed like a fairly normal justFRED kind of Saturday. There's a small crew working on justFRED on a daily basis: Stephen handles the servers, software and much of the integration, does most of the final publishing of the home pages, and gets panicky cellphone calls at all hours when equipment or software fails; Mila handles the site's overall look and feel, all of our stunning graphics, including our signs, and does the balloons; Catherine, Mae and Tairie take our photos; Catherine also does much of the video; Karen manages the calendars, the forums and keeps a general watch over the playground; Lindsay sells ads and sponsorships; I take photos and video, help with sales, and write most of the little bit of text we publish. We have an advisory board, the occasional volunteer, and a lot of people willing to Say Cheese! when they see our cameras. Yep, a regular fall Saturday in Freddy Beach...
Cheers,
George

Our 1st Anniversary
Posted by justfred.ca on November 16th, 2007
Today the first anniversary of justFRED. We've met an awful lot of people in Fredericton in the past 12 months - through one winter, spring, summer and fall - as you can see in our photo galleries of all those smiling faces. Thanks to everyone who agreed to Say Cheese!, who enjoyed our pages enough to look at more than six million of them, to the advertisers and sponsors who agreed to support our efforts despite our purposely low key approach to promoting their goods and services (Please support them - and don't be afraid to let them know you appreciate their support for justFRED.ca) For the photos, the kind words, the constructive criticism, for the calendar entries, the postings in our forums...thank you for all of it. It's been hard work - often late at night or very early in the morning - sometimes both - but well worth the effort. Cheers,
George

Content Sales
Posted by justfred.ca on November 12th, 2007
How do you balance promotion with fair compensation?
We're still looking for a way to offer selected images for sale on the web site, instead of the all-or-nothing solution we currently have in place. And without having two sets of images: all of them, and the ones we want to sell. The conundrum facing producers of intellectual property that's easy to digitize and share online is: how do I get exposure for my work while still getting fair compensation for it? Look at the writhing and convolutions on the part of the RIAA - the Record Industry Association of America as it sues grandmothers and children over music sharing. And the issue is also hitting movie studios, writers, photographers, jewellery designers. If you can get it onto the Internet...whoosh...it's gone. We haven't found a solution yet. If you can see it on the screen - you can copy it. Fortunately, computer monitors display images at 72 dots per inch, while decent prints start at about 300 dots per inch and double that is an even better starting point. So we'll keep looking. We have about 35,000 photos and videos we care about...and more going onto the site every day. Cheers,
George
